The iPhone 5 will not have a 4-inch screen, despite a slew of rumours and web speculation that Apple was looking to amp up the panel in order to compete with larger, flagship Android devices.

Supply chain sources, speaking with Digitimes, claim that the screen will be between 3.5 and 3.7 inches with a thinner bezel. These sources suggest that any talk of a 4-inch screen is emanating from those who want to see Apple include a larger screen.

The news follows a string of new stories about the iPhone 5 over the bank holiday weekend, with chatter about a new metal back plate and a completely new design for the top-end phone. Word is the headline-grabbing device will be joined by an 8GB iPhone 4, sold at a cheap price.

The iPhone 5 will go up for pre-order on 30 September, before hitting shelves on 7 October. That’s according to sources speaking with 9to5mac, independently backing up reports which emerged last week that the updated handset would be out in the first week of October.

Word is that Apple could slip this back to 14 October, but that production on the new phone is going well and the earlier date is currently more likely. Rumors suggest the company could unleash two new phones: one basic, affordable model, the other the much-rumored iPhone 5 with improved camera, voice assistant smarts and slim line frame.

This latest gossip does seem to peg an Apple event for September, despite the insistence of senior stateside journalists that such a gathering would not happen until October.

Whilst the lower third quarter shipping figures hint at a possible delay to the iPhone 5 launch, if accurate the huge fourth quarter quantities would see Apple’s handset quickly become the most popular device on the market.

With the iPhone 5 UK release date still shrouded in mystery latest iPhone 5 rumors have suggested the mooted device will launch in September with an Apple announcement tipped to be held on September 7th.

Further suggested iPhone 5 specs have seen the smartphone touted with supporting a 1GHz dual-core processor, slimmer form factor with a curved back and edge-to-edge display as well as an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p Full HD video recording capabilities.
